Omar D. Porras, D.M.D., M.S.

Born in Caracas-Venezuela, Dr. Porras received his first Dental Degree and Certificate as Specialist in Endodontics from Central University of Venezuela. After moving to the United States he attended Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, his Certificate as Specialist in Endodontology, and Master of Science in Oral Biology.

Since 1997, Dr. Porras has held faculty appointments in the Department of Endodontology of the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University, where he has been directly involved in the endodontic education of dental students and residents of its post-doctoral endodontic program.

Dr. Porras has published in recognized peer-reviewed journals papers in clinical endodontics and endodontic microbiology. In this field, Dr. Porras was part of the team that discovered the virus φEF11 from infected root canals. This unique finding prompted several research projects that will hopefully lead to the development of highly specific antimicrobial medications that will target antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.Click here to learn more.

In his constant pursuit for professional excellence, Dr. Porras voluntarily submitted himself to a stringent examination process by the American Board of Endodontists. He was able to demonstrate exceptional knowledge, skills and expertise in his specialty of endodontics and was awarded the prestigious title of “Diplomate” by the Board, a distinction held by a small percentage of the endodontists in the United States. Dr. Porras is member of the American Association of Endodontists. Currently he maintains a full-time practice limited to endodontics and lives in South Jersey with his wife Manena and family and enjoys baseball, photography and classical music.
